NVE Corporation Product Announcement

NVE Introduces New Smart TMR Magnetometer
Fast, accurate sensor is ideal for proximity or AC current

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn.—May 29, 2019—NVE Corporation today announced the SM225-10E high-speed Tunneling Magnetoresistance (TMR) Smart Magnetometer. The new part is ideal for measuring proximity or AC current, and for providing information for the Industrial Internet of Things.

The new sensor combines a unique TMR sensor element with elegant digital signal processing. A high-speed Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) interface provides access to sensor data and programmable parameters.

SM225 Detailed Block Diagram

Key SM225-10E features and specifications are summarized as follows:
  •  Wide 0 to 150 Oe / 0 to 15 mT linear range
  •  Can detect magnets more than 50 mm away
  •  Fast SPI interface
  •  2% of full-scale accuracy for 0 to 125°C
  •  Fast 15000 samples per second update rate
  •  Factory calibrated
  •  Programmable offset and gain compensation
  •  -40°C to 125°C operating range
  •  Ultraminiature 2.5 x 2.5 mm TDFN package

Convenient Magnetic Orientation
Unlike awkward, old-fashioned Hall-effect sensor elements, NVE smart magnetometers use spintronics such as TMR, which are sensitive in-plane for optimal current sensing and easy mechanical interfaces.

Accurate
The SM225 is the most accurate high-speed magnetometer in its class, with a total accuracy specification of two percent of full-scale over a 0 to 125 degrees Celsius operating temperature range and four percent over the full minus 40 to 125 degrees Celsius operating range. Accuracy is specified as a percentage of the SM225’s full-scale range of 150 oersteds or 15 millitesla.

The accuracy specification cover all error sources, including sensitivity, offset, nonlinearity, hysteresis, noise, and supply variation.

Fast
The SM225 has a sensor element bandwidth of 7.5 kHz and an update speed of 15000 samples per second, making it the fastest magnetometer of its type, and ideal for noncontact AC current sensing.

Small
With their 2.5 by 2.5 by 0.8 millimeter  leadless TDFN packages, NVE smart magnetometers are the smallest magnetometers with microcontroller interfaces in the industry.

Evaluation Kit
The AG953-07 Evaluation Kit has everything needed to evaluate the SM225-10E. The Kit includes an evaluation board with an SM225-10E sensor and a microcontroller with a USB interface. A current-carrying trace under the sensor allows evaluation as a current sensor.

Available Now
SM225-10E Smart Magnetometers are priced at $1.65 each in 1000-piece quantities. The AG953-07 Smart Magnetometer Evaluation Kits are $95.00 each. Sensors and kits are in stock for immediate delivery.

A Family of Smart Magnetometers
The SM225 is the third member of NVE’s groundbreaking smart magnetometer line, joining the general-purpose SM124 and the ultra-accurate SM324.

Leaders in Practical Spintronics
NVE is a leader in the practical commercialization of spintronics, a nanotechnology that relies on electron spin rather than electron charge to acquire, store and transmit information. The company manufactures high-performance spintronic products including sensors and couplers that are used to acquire and transmit data. NVE has also licensed its spintronic magnetoresistive random access memory technology, commonly known as MRAM.
